Artist Research - Lennart Nilsson

Lennart Nilsson was born in Strangnas in 1922 and is a pioneer in medical photography.  Lennart began his career as a photojournalist in the mid 1940’s and he published a number of photo essays in Swedish and foreign magazines.  Throughout his years, he has paid special attention to capturing the creation of a human being, from conception to birth in which he used macro lenses and instruments with special wide angle lenses. The publication of Drama of Life Before Birth in 1965 was a landmark, and in the same year his famous book A Child is Born was published and has since been published in 5 editions in over 20 countries.

Between 1965-1972 he produced stories on the heart and heart attacks and the microscopic view inside the body and the brain and he has also directed his attention to the animal world and the plant and insect world.

Lennart has received a number of awards and prizes for his photographic work. He was honoured  the title of professor in 2009

I find in fascinating how Lennart has managed to capture all of his ‘inside the body’ photographs with such precise detail.  Looking at his biography for the 1st time you would just think that he only specialises in the inner body photographs but then you find that he photographs nature too and he does the pair so well.
