Rankin, real name, John Rankin Waddell was born in 1966 and brought up in Scotland. He is a British portrait and fashion photographer. He was brought up in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and studied accounting at Brighton Polytechnic where at the age of 21 he dropped out realizing that he really wanted to do photography. He transferred to London College of Printing and studied photography. During his time studying photography, he met Jefferson Hack and formed a working relationship. They started a magazine together called Dazed and Confused once the pair had graduated.
Rankin has photographed so many famous people, these include Britney Spears, Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, Spice Girls, Madonna, David Bowie, Bjork, Lily Allen, The Rolling Stones, Vivienne Westwood, The Queen, amongst others. He has also shot some world renowned campaigns some of which include Nike, Unbro, Reebok, M&S, Rimmel, L’Oreal, Hugo Boss, Levis, BMW and Coca Cola.
Rankin has also made commercial television adverts, a gangster film and music promo videos. He also travelled to South Africa this year with the BBC to shoot the documentary South Africa in Pictures. He has also been commissioned to shoot Lace Up Save Lives for Nike to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS. He is commissioned with a number of charities and he is well known for creating hard hitting campaigns.
Rankin now lives in London with his wife and son.

Until now, I never realised how much of Rankins work we see in everyday life. I love his close up pictures of people, their vibrant colours and how he captures the character of his subjects. I also love the serious side to his work, the advertising photographs and the charity campaign photographs.
